CLOSER TO THE BONE
Review by Bob Howe
Moving up to the category of ‘elder statesman’, KRIS KRISTOFFERSON reflects on his life and mortality, but in a thankful and optimistic vein. In much the same way that producer RICK RUBIN brought us up-close sound and sparse backing on JOHNNY CASH’s later recordings, then so too does producer and bassist DON WAS here on Closer To The Bone. It gives a focus to Kristofferson’s lyrics that could have been lost under weightier arrangements. Indeed, the musicians here really do serve the songs well, with legend JIM KELTNER on drums and poignantly, this may be the last chance to hear Kristofferson alongside his soul-brother, guitarist STEPHEN BRUTON. Family and friends play a big part in the subject matter for these songs including name-checks for Johnny Cash, SINEAD O'CONNOR and the touching Hall of Angels (Dedicated To Eddie Rabbitt’s Lost Child). Add to this new collection the bonus disc of eight songs (including some earlier classics) recorded live and solo at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin and this is an inspired and thought-provoking set.
