SOMEDAYS THE SONG WRITES YOU
Review by Bob Howe
The cover artwork of this new GUY CLARK album features graph paper stained by blots and fingerprints and, most importantly, pencilled lyrics. This isn’t just for decoration, but a true representation of how this master songwriter actually works. He writes in longhand and recommends graph paper because “…it kind of keeps you in a straight line”. However Clark admits in Somedays You Write The Song, that the process is still really something slightly outside of his control. Next, The Guitar is a spooky tale, written with longtime collaborator VERLON THOMPSON on-the-spot in front of songwriting class as a demonstration. It was then shelved and only rediscovered and recorded here, several years later. One expertly crafted gem after another is performed with tasteful sparse accompaniment and sung in Clark’s somewhat serious and solemn tones. One song was co-written with RODNEY CROWELL and another two bear a co-writer credit for our own JEDD HUGHES. The only cover is If I Needed You by his late, great, songwriting buddy, TOWNES VAN ZANDT.
