TWO – Kevin Bennet & James Gillard
Kevin Bennett & James Gillard
Ironically this is a far bigger and stronger album than its predecessor. Kicking off with a song Bennett wrote during a Nashville sojourn with Robert Ellis Orrall Higher Ground that blends Kev’s soul based vocals with snappy lyrical ideas. A later track, KB’s 114th Nightmare spells out the homesick flipside to following your musical dream and Bennett, always a musician’s fave singer/songwriter shows throughout (taking the lion’s share of the vocals) just what a talent he is. The sweet voice of James Gillard with a penchant for poppier sounds is almost the flipside of Bennett and James musical sophistication shines. Like Simon & Garfunkel they come together to create something new out of disparate parts. James wrote two of his contributions with Heather Fields and the abstract Why Anyone is a perfect example of his sensibility. With assistance from some of Sydney’s best musicians (Doug’s Bligh & Gallacher on drums, Tim Wedde & Kirk Steel, keys, Michel Rose, steel and Mark Collins, banjo) this is a fine album deserving of wider exposure than it will undoubtedly receive.
